Reviews

Presenting a critical review as a video requires a combination of concise writing and effective editing to elevate your written points. When producing a video of this type, whether for myself or another writer, I begin by mapping out the key points of the review, and matching them to their corresponding visuals. I then work outwards from these points filling in with relavent footage that complements the text while avoiding anything that the viewer may find distracting. Cuts are placed intentionally to complement sentence structure until both the underlying review and video component fit as a cohesive unit.

Technical Analysis

Technical and performance analysis require a combination of expert knowledge, clear communication, and complex video production. The purpose of an analysis like this is to help the viewer understand complicated rendering and graphical concepts without overwhelming them in too much jargon. A key factor in all of this is providing visuals that clearly convey exactly what is being described at every moment. This often involves lining up distinct footage from multiple versions of a game, in order to show clear comparisons. Highlighting rendering techniques by adjusting video capture to make them easily visible can help make examples clear even to those watching on a small smartphone screen.

Documentary

Research driven documentaries require an extensive amount of both pre and post-production effort. This includes conducting interviews, gathering archival footage and photography, and filming b-roll relavent to the topic.

The first project shown, A Legacy in 3D: The Story of Star Fox was produced entirely as a solo project. This meant that in addition to conducting all the research, I then needed to find a narrative throughline to connect the eight different interviews. Narration then had to be written to fill in the gaps between interviews, and visuals matched to compliment each topic.

For the second project shown, Rediscovered Pioneer: The Woman Who Made Wabbit, I served as a video producer for an already written piece. This meant taking the components that had already been assembled in written form, and converting them into a compelling video. This required light edits to the original article, in cooperation with its authors to ensure that their intentions were preserved.

A good advertisement requires a deep understanding of your target audience along with your platform. The ad shown here was designed for use on social media sites such as TikTok. This means it needs to be oriented vertically which can be a challenge to edit around when most of your assets are configured for a traditional 16:9 display. Here you can see examples of fast paced, attention grabbing advertisement suited to these platforms

3D Animation

3D art and animation offers a unique form a total control that is impossible to find in other forms of video production. Rather than capturing something that already exists, everything you see has to be built from scratch, often starting from simple primitive shapes like cubes and spheres. I have a deep affinity for sylized “low-poly” 3D as seen in the late 80’s and early 90’s. It is a visual style entirely unique to this medium and I enjoy the distinctive look it provides, paired with the inherent challenge of representing complex objects with simple shapes.

The first video shown is a music video produced for the band treesreach. The goal of this music video was to emulate the visual style of the film, The Mind’s Eye. I decided to impose strict rules on myself to limit my rendering techniques to those accurate to the period I was emulating. This then made it extremely effective in the rare case we decided to break those rules for additional impact.

The second video shows the process of creating a unique 3D scene from modeling to final render.
